Joy at last; free wheelchairs for special persons in Migori

By FLEVIAN GEOFFREY: Migori County Government has launched a week-long wheelchair distribution drive in partnership with the WalkAbout Foundation.

The initiative, which kicked off on March 30, 2026, aims to enhance mobility for hundreds of residents living with physical disabilities.

The exercise is scheduled to conclude on April 3, 2026.

Fredrick Otieno, health official in charge of physiotherapy services at Migori County Referral Hospital, explained that each wheelchair is tailored to the specific needs of the recipient.

“The wheelchairs are being distributed based on a person’s specific disability after a thorough medical assessment,” Dr Otieno stated.

He urged residents with mobility challenges to come forward, specifically highlighting that the program caters to individuals from age five and above.

He issued a special appeal to parents who might be hesitant to seek help for their children.

“Mobility is essential in every person’s life. For those living with disabilities, a wheelchair is the solution. We ask parents not to shy away from bringing their children for assessment,” he added.

Paul Maina, Manager of the WalkAbout Foundation, revealed that the organization is also providing specialized clinical support.

“We not only give free wheelchairs but we are also offering rehabilitation services to children born with delayed milestones,” Maina said.

He further noted that the foundation is actively seeking to expand its reach by partnering with other county governments committed to disability advocacy.

Denis Ochieng, one of the beneficiaries, expressed his gratitude while addressing the stigma often faced by the community.

“People often say we are a burden to society, but this level of inclusivity rubbishes those claims,” Ochieng remarked.

“Thanks to the partnership between the government and organizations like WalkAbout, we are being empowered to lead independent lives.”
