Rongo MP, Paul Abuor, forced to cut short speech after locals jeered him

RONGO: Jamhuri Day celebrations at Rongo Primary School in Rongo Sub-County, Migori, descended into chaos as supporters of Rongo MP Paul Abuor clashed with those of a rival political figure.

The tension disrupted Migori County Commissioner Kisilu Mutua as he attempted to deliver President William Ruto’s speech, with rowdy youths from both camps heckling each other.

Efforts by Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko to restore calm partially succeeded, allowing Commissioner Mutua to complete the President’s address.

The unrest comes in the wake of a recent Parliamentary scorecard released by Mzalendo, a non-partisan Parliamentary Monitoring Organisation, which listed Mr Abuor among 19 lawmakers who failed to contribute to any debates in the National Assembly in 2024.

The report labeled the MPs as among the least vocal in representing public and constituency issues in Parliament.

Mzalendo advocates for open and accountable parliaments across Kenya and Africa, and its findings have stirred political discourse in Rongo, adding fuel to the ongoing political tensions.
