Pain as young GSU officer dies of suspected suicide in Garissa

GARISSA: The law enforcement community is mourning following the discovery of the body of a young General Service Unit (GSU) officer in Garissa County.

On Saturday morning, officials confirmed the death of 25-year-old PC Hussein Mohamed Sahal, in what is currently being treated as a suspected suicide.

According to reports from the Officer in Charge (OC) of the GSU Damajaley camp, the discovery was made at approximately 10:00 am today.

The officer’s body was found hanging from a cactus tree, roughly 50 meters away from the camp perimeter.

PC Sahal had recently been granted off-duty leave, departing the station at 5:00 PM yesterday evening. That departure was the last time he was seen alive by his colleagues.

Police officers from Liboi Police Station, alongside investigators from Dadaab, visited the scene to process the area.

While the initial report points toward suicide, investigators noted bruises on the officer’s legs and hands.

Consequently, the case has been marked as “Pending Under Investigation” (PUI) to rule out any foul play.

The scene was processed, and the body has since been moved to Garissa General Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

The death of such a young officer is a reminder of the mental and physical toll faced by those on the front lines.
