Police have arrested 56 male suspects in connection with the deadly chaos that disrupted a youth empowerment meeting at Sirikwa Umoja grounds in Kuresoi North, Nakuru County, on Friday.
The mass arrests come as the National Police Service (NPS) launches a high-stakes manhunt for the area Member of Parliament, Alfred Mutai, who has been named the prime suspect and is currently on the run.
Confirming the operation on the social media platform X, the National Police Service (NPS) stated that the all-male suspects remain in custody as detectives aggressively investigate a disturbance that claimed two lives.
Authorities also noted that responding officers successfully recovered several exhibits from the suspects, which are believed to have been used to orchestrate the bloody disruption.
Preliminary reports indicate that the violence erupted from a volatile confrontation between rival groups of suspected goons, with one faction allied to Kuresoi North MP Alfred Mutai and the other aligned with Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika.
As the two camps clashed, the situation quickly spiraled out of control; multiple individuals sustained serious gunshot wounds and had to be rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment, while a local bus used to ferry tents and chairs to the venue was set ablaze by unknown arsonists.
In the wake of the bloodshed, the National Police Service has named MP Mutai as the prime suspect in the incident, revealing that the legislator is currently on the run.
While a dedicated team of police officers has launched a manhunt to apprehend the lawmaker and his co-conspirators, the NPS issued a stern public directive urging Mutai to immediately surrender to the nearest police station to assist investigators in uncovering the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting
