By MOURINE SCOVIAN: The Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and MSME Development, Wycliffe Oparanya, has opposed the planned Gen Z demonstrations scheduled for Thursday, arguing that the protests will not benefit the youth or the country’s economic stability.
Speaking during an interview on KBC Channel One, Oparanya urged young people to reject street protests and instead embrace democratic and legal avenues when seeking solutions to the challenges they face.
He noted that while citizens possess a constitutional right to express grievances, structured dialogue with relevant institutions remains the most effective way to achieve lasting change.
Threat to businesses
The Cabinet Secretary expressed deep concern over the potential fallout of the demonstrations on micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
He warned that any unrest, disruption, or destruction of property would deal a heavy blow to everyday traders whose livelihoods depend on stable daily commerce.
“Any disruption negatively affects livelihoods and completely paralyses economic activities in our towns and cities,” Oparanya noted, emphasizing that small-scale traders often bear the brunt of street chaos.
Oparanya reiterated that the government remains committed to addressing the structural issues raised by Kenyans, particularly those affecting the younger generation. However, he maintained that these grievances should be channeled systematically rather than through mass action.
The CS encouraged citizens to present their petitions through Parliament, specialized government agencies, and other established legal channels to facilitate formal action and swift resolution.
Closing his remarks, Oparanya appealed for calm and restraint ahead of Thursday, calling on both the youth and security apparatus to prioritize the safety of businesses, public property, and the nation’s fragile economic recovery.
