40 Arrested as angry Homa Bay residents rise up against ‘Rock Boys’ terror gang

A ruthless criminal gang dubbed the “Rock Boys”, composed primarily of teenage school dropouts, has plunged Shauri Yako Estate in Homa Bay Town into a state of terror, forcing residents to live under a constant shadow of violence.

The gang has effectively transformed the once-peaceful neighborhood into a virtual no-go zone.

For months, residents have accused local security agencies of doing little to shield the community from a brutal reign of muggings and intimidation.

Frustrated by the perceived inaction, neighborhood vigilantes and locals took matters into their own hands last week, launching a massive grassroots crackdown on suspected hideouts.

The civilian operation eventually drew the backing of local law enforcement, culminating in a joint sweep that netted at least 40 suspects.

According to police and intelligence briefs, the profile of the criminal network paints a deeply worrying picture of youth vulnerability and exploitation:

The vast majority of the 40 arrested suspects are teenagers aged between 16 and 19.

Investigators revealed that most of the youth had dropped out of school and were already facing active, unresolved court cases, including capital offenses such as robbery with violence.

The gang primarily operates under the cover of darkness, preying on unsuspecting pedestrians navigating the poorly lit alleyways and corridors of Shauri Yako as they commute home.

Political hands

The investigation has also uncovered a disturbing double life led by some of the gang members.

Authorities revealed that during the day, prominent local politicians frequently hire these same teenagers to serve as rowdy personal security detail and campaign muscle.

Once night falls, however, the youth return to the slums to resume localized criminal activities.

Homa Bay County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi expressed grave concern over the weaponization of the town’s youth, describing the trend of teenagers turning to violent crime as deeply alarming.

Mwiwawi called for an urgent, concerted effort between administrative, judicial, and community leaders to rescue young people from the grip of lawlessness before the estate completely slips into anarchy.
