Accountability coupled with entertainment: the shift in Kenya’s public discourse

By IMMACULATE NYAKIO: Kenya today is facing a period where conversations about the economy, politics, and leadership dominate public discourse.

Across social media platforms, television stations, learning institutions, and even public transport, citizens are expressing frustration over the rising cost of living, unemployment, and governance.

What is currently trending in Kenya is no longer just entertainment or celebrity gossip, but the growing voice of young people demanding accountability and change.

One of the biggest challenges affecting Kenyans today is the skyrocketing cost of living with the fuel prices topping the list.

With the increased fuel prices, the ripple effect is felt on high cost of transport and all other basic commodities.

Many families are struggling to afford food, rent, and school fees.

Small businesses are also finding it difficult to stay afloat because customers have reduced their spending.

For ordinary citizens, life has become significantly more challenging than before.

Unemployed graduates

Young people have especially felt the impact of these economic pressures as thousands of graduates leave universities every year hoping to secure jobs, but opportunities remain limited.

Many youths are forced to depend on temporary jobs, online businesses, freelancing, and content creation just to survive.

This has caused widespread frustration among young Kenyans who feel that despite their education and hard work, their future remains uncertain.

Social media has become the primary platform where citizens express their opinions and frustrations.

Platforms such as TikTok, X, Facebook, and Instagram are filled with discussions about leadership, corruption, unemployment, and taxes. Kenyan youth are now using social media not only for entertainment but also as a tool for activism and civic education.

Through hashtags and online campaigns, they are driving national conversations and forcing leaders to respond to public concerns.

Another defining trend in Kenya today is the growing political awareness among young people.

Unlike in the past, many youths are now actively interested in governance and public policy; they are questioning decisions made by leaders and demanding transparency and accountability.

Public criticism of government spending and economic policies has become common because citizens want leaders who prioritize the welfare of ordinary Kenyans.

The relationship between leaders and citizens has also become severely strained.

Many Kenyans feel disappointed because leaders often make grandiose promises during campaigns but fail to fulfill them after elections.

This has created deep distrust among citizens, especially the youth, who feel ignored despite making up the majority of the population. As a result, protests and demonstrations have become more frequent as citizens attempt to make their voices heard.

Online Campaigns

The entertainment industry continues to shape what trends in Kenya; musicians, TikTok content creators, YouTubers, and other influencers attract large audiences daily.

Viral videos, dance challenges, celebrity drama, and relationship discussions dominate online conversations.

Beyond the entertainment value, however, many content creators are also using their platforms to discuss serious issues such as mental health, unemployment, relationships, and the financial struggles affecting young people.

Despite the many challenges facing the country, Kenyan youth continue to show remarkable resilience and creativity.

Many are using their talents and skills to create opportunities for themselves instead of waiting for employment, others are speaking out against injustice and encouraging fellow citizens to participate actively in national matters.

This proves that the younger generation is becoming more aware of its role in shaping the country’s future.

Way forward

My take is, the most significant trend in Kenya today is this awakening of the youth. Young people are no longer silent about the issues affecting their lives.

They are speaking out through protests, social media activism, entrepreneurship, and public discussions, and all they want better leadership, economic opportunities, and a country where every citizen has a fair chance to succeed.

Kenya is at a critical crossroads in its history, the choices made by leaders and citizens today will determine the future of the nation.

If leaders listen to the concerns of the people, and if the youth continue to participate responsibly in national development, Kenya can still become a better, more prosperous, and united country.
