Nairobi’s security and investigative agencies have recorded maor breakthroughs involving high-tech cyber fraud and corporate embezzlement.
In the first incident, detectives from DCI Parklands arrested four Chinese nationals following a sophisticated SIM-swapping and money-laundering investigation.
The operation was launched after a local businesswoman reported that her two Safaricom lines had suddenly gone dead, cutting off her access to calls and M-Pesa services.
Investigations revealed that the hijacked lines were weaponized to receive illicit funds from a gaming and betting platform.
The money was then rapidly laundered through a network of mobile numbers and bank accounts linked to the suspects.
The digital trail led officers to Xiaoling Gu, Guodong Fu, Wenji Gao, and Gu Xiaopeng. During a subsequent raid on their premises, detectives recovered a cache of digital and financial gear, including:15 Safaricom SIM cards and nine Airtel SIM cards registered under third parties, six foreign-national SIM cards, six mobile phones and multiple laptops, three ATM cards belonging to different account holders, and Sh 1,125,800 in cash
The four suspects were arraigned before the Kibra Chief Magistrate’s Court, with a ruling on their bond application set for September 4, 2026.
Meanwhile, the DCI Nairobi Regional Office has nabbed two directors of Flexitech Group Limited in connection with the alleged theft of Sh31.2 million from a leading Kenyan retail chain.
Suspects Martin Kariuki Maina and Johnson Gituma Mwangi were tracked down and arrested in the Roysambu area following a formal complaint by the retailer.
According to investigators, the suspects, acting as official agents for the retail chain, collected Sh31,213,700.95 in customer payments from various branches meant for onward remittance to the parent company.
Instead of remitting the funds, the directors allegedly conspired with accomplices still at large to divert the colossal sum for personal use. The duo was processed ahead of their arraignment at the Milimani Law Courts to face formal charges of stealing by agent, contrary to Section 283(b) of the Penal Code.
The dual arrests highlight a growing crackdown on both digital financial predators and corporate malfeasance as authorities tighten the noose on white-collar crime across the capital.
