Ugenya’s Jera Mixed Secondary Closed: Students Protest Poor Management & Food

UGENYA: Jera Mixed Secondary School in Ugenya sub-county has been shut down indefinitely following a student protest this morning.

Students initially held a peaceful demonstration to air their grievances against the head teacher, Moses Okanda. They accused him of mismanaging the institution and perennial absenteeism, demanding his immediate transfer.

Among their key complaints was a severe shortage of food; students claimed the school administration has been serving them expired food, and that meals are consistently delayed. Lunch, they stated, is often served as late as 3:00 PM, and dinner at 9:00 PM – well beyond their timetabled meal times.

Officials from the Ministry of Education, led by Ugenya sub-county TSC Director Bernard Orwasa, visited the school.

They instructed students to return home, urging patience while their concerns are addressed.

However, students preparing for this year’s KCSE examination have remained at the school to continue their ongoing mock exams.
