BONDO: Energy Cabinet Secretary James Opiyo Wandayi has issued a stern warning to individuals opposing the proposed Sh 500 billion nuclear power plant in Bondo Constituency, cautioning them against inciting residents and disrupting the flagship project.

Speaking during a tour of Bondo Constituency, Wandayi emphasized that the national government’s decision to site Kenya’s first nuclear power plant in Siaya County represents a monumental developmental opportunity that should not be squandered.

The Cabinet Secretary accused external actors of utilizing handouts to manipulate local residents and instigate chaos surrounding the multi-billion-shilling initiative.

He further alleged that unnamed locals and their associates, including individuals whose parents previously served as Cabinet ministers, are actively orchestrating confusion to undermine the development.

Wandayi also pointed to a shift in local sentiment following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

“The residents had initially embraced the project during the first public participation forum after receiving clarification from Mr Odinga, only to reverse their stance afterward. This is not how things are done,” said the energy boss.

Urging the communities of Bondo and Rarieda sub-counties to fully embrace the initiative, Wandayi called on locals to reject attempts to politicize the venture.

He lauded Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda for his steadfast support of the proposed plant, highlighting the transformative economic opportunities it is expected to bring to the region.

Despite the government’s strong backing, the ambitious nuclear project continues to face pushback from local residents and environmental advocacy groups.

Critics have raised persistent concerns regarding: long-term environmental hazards and safety protocols, transparency and fairness in securing land for the facility, and queestions regarding whether adequate and inclusive community engagement has been carried out.
